Classification Diagnostic Features of Larvae
  • Mature larva. Extremely similar to that of Macrotoma serripes, from which it may be distinguished as follows. Head with antennal segment 2 moderately elongate and not attenuated apically, the oblique sensory area round. Pupa. Resembles that of M. serripes, from which it differs in having an additional pair of gin-traps.

First-instar larva. Length up to 4.2 mm. Differs from the mature larva mainly in the form of the antenna, the micro-pubescent posterior half of the pronotum, the micro-spiculate abdominal segments and the long lateral setae.

Egg. Length 3.9 mm; breadth 1.5 mm. Form ovoid, with one end rather bluntly tapering, the other more strongly tapering. Chorion white, smooth, except for scattered digitiform tubercles which are more numerous around the anterior end. Adapted from Duffy (1957).
