Opisognathus forficatus

Classification Diagnostic Features of Larvae
  • Mature larva. Length up to 90 mm; maximum breadth (at prothorax) 15 mm. Form subcylindrical, robust, gradually tapering posteriorly to segment 9. Head moderately depressed, slightly transverse (maximum head-width 10.1 mm). Genae strongly shouldered, rugose, broadly ferruginous to pitchy and bearing a few pale setae. Mouthframe strongly sclerotized, rugose, broadly pitchy. Front margin of frons comprising a heavily sclerotized, pitchy ridge which is abruptly sloping; upper boundary varying from straight to very feebly bilobed, keel-shaped and notched medially; lower boundary produced over clypeus as an evenly curved flange which is broadest laterally (in some specimens the anterior margin is slightly notched paramedially). Postcondylar carina distinct; subfossal process acutely conical. Antenna 3-segmented; segment 2 subquadrate, barrel-shaped, obliquely truncate apically and bearing a minute oval sensory organ and a slightly elongate, distinctly sclerotized apical segment. Mandible very robust, pitchy, shining, with outer face. strongly rugose and bearing a few stout setae. Labrum transversely oval, leathery, with front margin densely setose. Ocelli indiscernible. Prothorax moderately depressed, about twice as broad as long, with an orange-brown, transverse band near front margin. Pronotum with lateral groove deep, complete; median cleavage line indistinct; posterior area of pronotum vermiculately rugose and sparsely setose. Eusternum distinct, triangular, vermiculately rugose and sparsely setose. Mesonotum and metanotum finely rugose, glabrous. Abdomen with dorsal and ventral ampullae on segments 1-7; ampullae smooth and very sparsely setose. Pleural discs present on segments 1-6; each radially striate, with a deep pore. Segment 9 smooth, somewhat extended. Segment 10 trilobed, the lobes compact and strongly protuberant. Legs slightly shorter than maxillary palpi, ferruginous, densely setose. Spiracles with peritreme broadly oval, rather thick and slightly raised above general level of cuticle.

Egg. Length 3.5-4.5 mm.; breadth 1.5 mm. Form elongate-oval, sometimes slightly curved, rounded at both ends. Chorion hard, yellowish white, densely micropunctate. Adapted from Duffy (1957).
