Classification Diagnostic Features of Larvae
  • Mature larvae. Similar to that of Ancylonotus tribulus, from which it differs as follows. Length up to 32 mm; maximum breadth (at prothorax) 6.5 mm. Head with sides more strongly rounded anteriorly (maximum head-width 4.1 mm). Ocelli usually discernible, but in some specimens obscured by sclerotization of gena. Hypostoma with a pair of paramedian foveae or transverse impressions. Antenna with segment 2 only slightly longer than broad. Labial palpi with segment 2 at least half length of segment 1. Prothorax with spicules on posterior part of pronotum longer and denser, the whole spiculate area ferruginous and much darker than anterior testaceous area. Abdomen with dorsal ampullae bearing only a single transverse (posterior) furrow.

    Pupa. Resembling that of Ancylonotus tribulus, from which it differs as follows. Length up to 16 mm; maximum breadth 7 mm. Pronotum with only a single tuberculate conical protuberance which is situated medially on disc. Abdomen with tergites 2-5 with anterior row of spines very incomplete. Adapted from Duffy (1957).
Biology and Economic Importance
