Asemini

Classification Introduction
  • The tribe Asemini Thomson, 1861 currently contains ~80 species in ~12 genera. Photographs of 6 exemplar specimens are currently available for this tribe.
Diagnostic Features of Adults
  • Mesotarsus with 4 distinct tarsomeres and reduced penultimate one (pseudotetramerous). Procoxal cavities externally narrowly open. Femoral attachment of mid trochanter transverse or slightly oblique. Scutellum not abruptly elevated. Ratio of body length to greatest body width 2.8-3.82. Antennae not borne on raised tubercles. Antennae filiform (Lawrence, 2007).
Diagnostic Features of Larvae
  • Larva. The species of Asemum, Arhopalus, and Nothorhina cannot be separated generically as larvae. Without exception every character found either varies within the genus or is of only relative value and can be recognized only in the species. Their similarity when a large series is studied is very striking. The best character of specific value is the shape and position of the caudal spines. In general it may be said that Arhopalus and Nothorhina are more robust and more densely haired. The asperities on the posterior area of the prothorax are much coarser and darker in color and the glabrous spots more numerous in Arhopalus. The species may be collectively recognized as follows: Head rather salient; labrum cordate, longer than wide; no ocelli; genal bristles long and dense; mandibles having ventral apical angle sharply acute and dorsal angle of cutting edge flattened into a triangular, more or less striated plate; gula longer than wide. Pronotum posteriorly very finely asperate or velvety, as also the ampullae, but much less so. Adapted from Craighead (1923).
