The capsules of pereiro-amargo, commonly called pintado hearts in the potpourri trade, appear as woody hearts. This tree bears 3-5 cm long capsules enclosing winged seeds. The inside of the capsule is smooth, the outside heavily veined and slightly pebbled.
Aspidosperma cuspa is native to Brazil.
