Daedalea quercina (L.) Pers., Syn. Meth. Fung (Gottingen). 500 (1801).
The fruiting bodies of the robust conk or oak mazegill, a basidiomycete of the Order Polyporales, are sold in the potpourri trade as “spring mushrooms.” The pieces of this gilled fungus are variable in shape and size but all are spongy with a plain surface on top and anastomosing ribs underneath and an off-white to pale brown color (in its native state). Typically, this grows on rotting oak trees.
Daedalea quercina is distributed worldwide in the north temperate zone in moist forests.
