, protibial spurs: 2, tarsal clawstarsal claw:
usually paired claws of the pretarsus, at the distal end of the leg
simple.

Form moderate-sized, subdepressed; pubescence dense, appressed, elytraelytron:

with long erect setaeseta:
a sclerotized hair-like projection of the cuticle
. Head with front convex, quadrate to transversetransverse:
broader than long
; mandibles feebly arcuatearcuate:
arched or bow-like
; genaegena:
the part of the cranium on each side below the eye
slightly convergent, shorter or longer than lower eye lobes; eyes moderate-sized, deeply emarginateemarginate:
notched at the margin
, upper lobes small, separated by varying distances; antennal tubercles prominent widely divergentdivergent:
spreading out from a common base
at basebase:
the part of any appendage or structure that is nearest the body
; antennaeantenna:
in larval and adult insects, paired segmented appendages, borne one on each side of the head, functioning as sense organs and bearing a large number of sensilla
eleven-segmented, slender, longer than body in both sexes, basal segments with some long, suberect setaeseta:
a sclerotized hair-like projection of the cuticle
beneath, scapescape:
the first proximal segment of the antenna
longer or shorter than third segment, fourth subequal to or shorter than third. Pronotumpronotum:
the upper and dorsal part of the prothorax
broader than long, sides acutely tuberculate behind middle; disk with three, often vague, calluses, one median and two behind apical margin basebase:
the part of any appendage or structure that is nearest the body
broadly, deeply impressed behind lateral spines; apexapex:
end of any structure distad to the base
vaguely, narrowly impressed; prosternum narrow, intercoxal process slender, not laminiform; mesostemum with intercoxal process narrow, slightly broader than prosternal process; metasternum with episternumepisternum:
the aspect of a thoracic pleuron dorsal to the coxal cavity and anterior to the pleural suture
narrow, subparallel. ElytraElytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
about twice or slightly more as long as broad; epipleura partially vertical; disk with small basal crests and usually small tufted tubercles, costae usually distinct; pubescence short, appressed, erect setaeseta:

Differential diagnosis

The erect setaeseta:
a sclerotized hair-like projection of the cuticle
often arising from small hair tufts on the elytraelytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
and narrow pro/mesosternal processes will distinguish Eutrichillus from other Acanthocinine genera.

Distribution

Nearctic south to Honduras

Recorded host plants

broadleaf; Pinus spp.

Remarks

6 species. E. comus likely not on conifers but others are. Preliminary data (Gorring, unpub.) indicate that Eutrichillus may be partially artificial with some species belonging to Acanthocinus
