Taxonomy
Heteroborips Reitter, 1913: 79.
Diagnosis
2.50−4.00 mm long, 2.20−3.25 times as long as wide. In this region Heteroborips is distinguished by the distinctive elytralelytral:
pertaining to the elytra
mycangium appearing as a distinctly impressedimpressed:

.
May be confused with
Xyleborinus and Xyleborus
Distribution
Distributed throughout Europe and temperate Asia including the Himalayas. One species is introduced and established in USA (Hoebeke and Rabaglia 2008Hoebeke and Rabaglia 2008:
Hoebeke ER, Rabaglia RJ. 2008. Xyleborus seriatus Blandford (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), an Asian ambrosia beetle new to North America. Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington 110: 470-476.).
Gallery system
The gallery system of Heteroborips is unique among xyleborines and lies wholly between the bark and wood (Mandelshtam et al. 2019Mandelshtam et al. 2019:
Mandelshtam M Yu, Petrov AV, Smith SM, Cognato AI. 2019. Resurrection of Heteroborips Reitter, 1913 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) from synonymy with Xyleborus Eichhoff, 1864. The Coleopterists Bulletin 73: 387minus;394. https://doi.org/10.1649/0010-065X-73.2.387).
Remarks
The genus was considered a synonym of Xyleborus for many years. It was recently resurrected and reviewed by Mandelshtam et al. 2019Mandelshtam et al. 2019:
