any hardened plate of the body wall bounded by membrane or sutures; sometimes found floating in the internal sac of male genitalia
in internal sac.

Well distinguished from other species of this genus by dense bright hairs imparting a vivid hue to the hind clivus of the elytraelytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
, flat, entirely and densely covered shield, and other characters. Body comparatively large. Head with moderate, not very dense, sometimes evanescent punctationpunctation:
pits or depression of variable size in cuticle
, near basebase:
the part of any appendage or structure that is nearest the body
of antennaeantenna:
in larval and adult insects, paired segmented appendages, borne one on each side of the head, functioning as sense organs and bearing a large number of sensilla
on inner side with highly (male) or insignificantly (female) produced tubercletubercle:
a small knoblike or rounded protuberance
, medially between antennaeantenna:
in larval and adult insects, paired segmented appendages, borne one on each side of the head, functioning as sense organs and bearing a large number of sensilla
with deep narrow (male) or broad gentle (female) longitudinal trough. punctationpunctation:
pits or depression of variable size in cuticle
,.0–2.5 times longer than body (male) or barely (by l0th–11th segment) extending beyond apexapex:
end of any structure distad to the base
of elytraelytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
(female). First antennal segment thick, with coarse compact punctationpunctation:
pits or depression of variable size in cuticle
, apically on outer side with sharply demarcated semicircular mark. Pronotumpronotum:
the upper and dorsal part of the prothorax
not longer or barely longer than its basal width, in anterior third and basally with distinct flange, here generally transversely striatestriate:
marked with parallel, fine, longitudinal, impressed lines or furrows
, disk with uneven, sometimes faint punctationpunctation:
pits or depression of variable size in cuticle
, laterally with highly extended conicalconical:
wider at base than apex
tubercle. Pronotal shield flat, posteriorly broadly rounded, entirely covered with dense whitish or yellowish hairs. ElytraElytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
elongateelongate:
much longer than wide
, parallel-sided (female) or markedly tapering toward apexapex:
end of any structure distad to the base
, at latter jointly rounded, convex, in anterior half with transversetransverse:
broader than long
notch, before this notch with bold compact, and in front minute punctationpunctation:
pits or depression of variable size in cuticle
, with short sparse, on hind clivus dense gray hairs, imparting here whitish tinge to common black background. Body ventrally with short white adherent and long brownish semierect hairs not forming continuous pubescence. Legs long, femora uniformly insignificantly thickened, hind tarsitarsus:
the leg segment distal to the apex of the tibia, bearing the pretarsus; consists of one to five tarsomeres (including pretarsus)
two-third (male) or one-half (female) length of tibiaetibia:
the leg segment distal to the femur, proximal to the tarsus
. Body, antennaeantenna:
in larval and adult insects, paired segmented appendages, borne one on each side of the head, functioning as sense organs and bearing a large number of sensilla
, and legs black; elytraelytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
black, disk with uneven white pilose spots (female) or without them (male), hind clivus with whitish or slightly rusty tinge. Body length 18–37 mm. (Cherepanov 1990Cherepanov 1990:

Differential diagnosis

Has dense light setaeseta:
a sclerotized hair-like projection of the cuticle
on the apical third of the elytraelytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
not found in M. s. sartor. The elytral sculpture is punctatepunctate:
set with fine, impressed points or punctures appearing as pin-pricks
and more matte than the shining and impunctate M. nitens. New World Monochamus species do not have a distinct raised area followed by an impression at the basebase:
the part of any appendage or structure that is nearest the body
of the elytraelytron:
the leathery forewing of beetles, serving as a covering for the hind wings, commonly meeting opposite elytron in a straight line down the middle of the dorsum in repose
or a scleritesclerite:
any hardened plate of the body wall bounded by membrane or sutures; sometimes found floating in the internal sac of male genitalia
in the male genitalia.
