Zeugodacus depressus

Taxonomy

Valid name: Zeugodacus (Zeugodacus) depressus Shiraki, 1933
Preferred common name: temperate fruit fly
Synonyms:
Bactrocera depressa (subsequent combination in White & Elson-Harris, 1992)
Dacus depressus (subsequent combination in Hardy, 1974)
Paradacus depressus (subsequent combination in Ito, 1952)
Parazeugodacus depressus (subsequent combination in Ito, 1977)
Zeugodacus bezzianus Hering, 1941 (junior synonym)
Bactrocera bezziana (subsequent combination in White & Hancock, 1997)

Morphology-based identification

Zeugodacus depressus can be identified reliably based on morphological characters. Spot characters are the two pairs of setae on the scutellum and an infuscation around vein CuA1.

Molecular identification

COI sequence data can be used to identify Z. depressus (Doorenweerd et al. 2024Doorenweerd et al. 2024:

).

Distribution

Zeugodacus depressus is one of the few Dacini that has adapted to a temperate climate and has been recorded as far North as Hokkaido in Japan, and can be found in Korea, China and Taiwan. Its native range is unclear.

Further information

Zeugodacus depressus is reported as a "category C" pest of Cucurbitaceae fruit in Vargas et al. 2015Vargas et al. 2015:
Vargas RI, Pinero JC, Leblanc L, 2015. An overview of pest species of Bactrocera fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) and the integration of biopesticides with other biological approaches for their management with a focus on the pacific region. Insects 6: 297–318. https://doi.org/10.3390/insects6020297
. A category C pest is there defined as "relatively minor oligophagous or specialist fruit or cucurbit pests".
