Leaf heterophylly

Heterophyllousheterophyllous:
(adj) with dissimilar leaves on the same plant; often occurs on plants with both submersed and emersed leaves
plants have dissimilar leaves on the same plant. Note that heterophyllyheterophyllous:
(adj) with dissimilar leaves on the same plant; often occurs on plants with both submersed and emersed leaves
cannot by ruled out (the state "leaves morphologically homogeneous") if your specimen is not the whole plant or a whole stem. For example, if your specimen is only two similar looking leaves, you cannot necessarily determine if a different looking leaf is borne on another part of the stem.

In aquatic plants that are heterophyllousheterophyllous:
(adj) with dissimilar leaves on the same plant; often occurs on plants with both submersed and emersed leaves
, leaf form is determined by a plant's environment -- whether a leaf is submergedsubmerged:
(adj) (syn. submersed) under water; submerged below the water surface
or emergentemergent:
(adj) (syn. emersed) with parts raised out of the water; extending up out of the water
. Leaves may grade from one form to another along an emerging stem, or leaves may be of two quite distinct forms.

with both emersed and submersed leaves distinct morphologically (heterophyllous)
