A new web site for identifying Hawaiian owlet moths (family Noctuidae)
ITP is pleased to announce the release of Noctuidae of Hawaiʻi, an interactive identification resource produced in collaboration with University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa focused on the adults and larvae of noctuids found across the Hawaiian Islands. The resource is designed to support accurate identification of nonnative noctuids known in the state as well as representatives of native noctuid radiations. It covers all 27 non-native species that are known to be established in Hawaiʻi and all nine native or putatively native genera, each supported by detailed fact sheets outlining diagnostic characters, distribution, and biology. Noctuidae of Hawaiʻi also provides a multi-entry key to adults and larvae of these taxa.
Given the complexity and uniqueness of Hawaiʻi’s ecosystems, and the importance of early detection of invasive species to protect Hawaiʻi’s native biodiversity and agricultural systems, Noctuidae of Hawaiʻi serves as a practical, authoritative resource for field specialists, diagnosticians, and partners engaged in survey and identification work statewide. It joins ITP’s expanding suite of online identification resources developed to support PPQ’s mission to safeguard U.S. agriculture and natural resources.
TP hosts over 50 identification tool websites.
